Workflow engine, in essence, is a database containing the current status of every process instance (e.g. order, invoice or service case) at each step of the process. Workflow engine knows exactly, at any point in time, where that customer order is sitting. A good workflow engine provides functionality to monitor process delays and create alerts if certain thresholds are exceeded. It can handle errors and exceptions, as well as processes which run over a long time.

When we talk about process automation, the term actually comprises two important components: control flow automation (what happens after each process step) and task automation (how each process step is performed). Using a workflow engine, businesses can automate control flow even for fully manual processes, thus increasing transparency and compliance and laying the groundwork for future task automation.
